Crockett Park

The Clark Griffith Park stadium was built in 1940. With the capacity of 5,000 people, the stadium was situated at 400 Magnolia Avenue in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Used mainly for baseball, it was the home ground for the Charlotte Hornets from 1940 to 1971 and then later to the Charlotte Orioles from 1976 to 1985. The Charlotte Hornets were a baseball club of Charlotte, North Carolina created in 1901 and was a farm team for the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins. In 1976, the wresting promoter Jim Crockett, Jr. purchased the Asheville Orioles and renamed them the Charlotte Orioles. The park was renamed to Jim Crockett, Sr. Memorial Park, to honour the buyer in 1976 after the renovations for the O’s were done.

The Clark Griffith Park with its immense capacity has a covered grandstand which extends from first base to third. On March 16th, 1985 the stadium was consumed by fire and destroyed. It was later determined that the fire was deliberately set by youths. It was later replaced by the Knights Stadium after several seasons of playing in a temporary stadium.
