The Charlotte Hornets, a baseball club now known as the Charlotte Knights, was founded in 1901. From Charlotte, North Carolina, the Hornets played in the minor baseball league till 1973, during which time they managed to win 11 league titles.
The club established a new ball park, the Calvin Griffith Park, in 1940 on Magnolia Avenue. The Calvin Griffith Park was later renamed to Jim Crockett, Sr. Memorial Park. For 45 years this park remained as the home ground of the Charlotte ball clubs until the day it was consumed by fire and wrecked.
The hornets played various minor baseball leagues including Piedmont League, the original South Atlantic League, the North Carolina League, the Tri-State League, and later back to the South Atlantic League and its modern successor the Southern League. The Charlotte Hornets won the championships in each of these leagues many a times.
The Charlotte Hornets were affiliated to the original Washington Senators franchise and the Minnesota Twins during 1937-42 and 1946-72. The Minnesota Twins were the successors of the original Washington Senators during the post 1960 period.
Later in 1976, after a two year break from professional baseball, a new Charlotte club was founded and was named as the Charlotte Knights. This club continued to play at the Crockett Park until March 17th in 1985 when the club was deliberately set on fire and destroyed.
